Dream of Water

The wetlands we visited showed no signs of water,

except for the gourds that I picked up.

Round yellow spheres,

like the bright winter sun that hung above the horizon.

Tiny, fragile microcosms filled with stringy fibers and seeds,

floating in a sea of dry grass.

The sides of the gourds that kissed the ground,

were damp, soft and yielding,

when I gently pressed their shells.

You told me stories about grey manatees,

and I dreamed of water,

in that place of barren beauty.

Empty, dry, desiccated and brittle,

Where everything crunched as we walked.

Yet,

I could hear myself think.

I was outside of the fray.

March 16th workshop–New Location!

We are moving the location for the workshop on Sunday, March 16th to:

Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve :

Sunday, March 16th from 1-4pm

The Santa Fe Botanical Gardens has very generously offered us the use of the Leonora Curtain Wetlands Preserve in La Cienega for free! At this time of year the Wetland Preserve is closed, but we have been given special permission for its use. This requires that you arrive on time as the gate will be closed and locked behind us. We have this lovely 35 acre park all to ourselves for the afternoon.

Please make sure you arrive by 1:00. Call Kirsten’s cell if you arrive late and get locked out : 505-467-9836

**Please make sure to dress warmly – layers are good, as it could become quite warm. Please bring water, snacks, paper and pens / pencils **

There is a porta potty in the ample parking lot. You may want to bring hand sanitizer. Since the garden is officially closed to the public we must pack out all garbage! Please be prepared to do so.

 

DIRECTIONS: The preserve is located on the I-25 West Frontage Road south of Santa Fe. From I-25 take Exit 271 for “La Cienega” and turn right onto West Frontage Road heading north. The parking lot entrance is 1½ miles north after turning onto West Frontage Road.

From New Mexico State Road 599 (NM-599), turn south onto West Frontage Road heading toward the Downs at Santa Fe Race Track. The parking lot entrance is two miles south of the Downs at Santa Fe Race Track.
